I know, I know what you’re thinking…. it’s the middle of August. Girl, it ain’t fall! But y’all, I just can’t help it. I AM that girl who starts prepping for Fall Fashion in August! I blame it on the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale that always propels me to start thinking about fall fashion far earlier than the weather deems it appropriate. But there’s also the ‘Back to School’ aisle at Target (what is it about fresh pens?!), the J.Crew September catalog that makes me want to sell myself to the brand entirely, the ads for College Football games to come intermixed into the Olympic coverage…. so let’s just face it… basically fall is coming like, tomorrow. 😉 Whether you’re on board with me in this or not just yet, hear me out! Today’s post is all about little ways you can sneakily begin to add in Fall Fashion when it’s still very much summer weather!
Let me break down my suggestions into categories:
Gingham: I love a good gingham print. And though it very well may seem like a spring and summertime print, I think it’s actually the perfect transitional print for fall! It’s not a heavy flannel or plaid which does not pair well with 90+ degree heat. Hello, lower back sweat. Gingham, especially in a darker tone, is the perfect way to start hinting at a flannel look without the commitment. And once the weather does turn, you can easily layer it with a vest and/or scarf!
Lightweight sweaters in neutral colors: Sure, you think of cozy and chunky knits while cuddled up fireside when you get into fall mode, but that just isn’t realistic for us here in California. We barely get that weather come end of November sometimes! So, stock up on neutral knits. Right now, Old Navy has so many good options of lightweight pullover and open knit sweaters that would perfectly pair with crops, shorts, a lightweight dress… just a little something to layer for the look of fall, without actually bundling up. These little knits are also perfect for a cool morning or evening, or when the frigid AC gets to you when it’s sweltering outside (all of which occur during a Bay Area Indian Summer)!
Fun floral frocks: I wouldn’t call my style ‘boho’ in the slightest, but I do love an easy fitting, floral print dress, especially in this transitional fashion season. Again, Old Navy is winning at this right now! There are so many good lightweight dresses in perfect “hinting at Fall” prints. I am loving that so many have a “berry toned” option in the prints – the perfect way for this pink-loving lady to transition from bright hot pinks to more fall appropriate hues.
Booties: I love tall riding boots like the next Tory Burch fan girl but I can’t deal with them until it’s actually cold outside. Calves swelling, no thanks. So, booties are the perfect way to start wearing boots while it’s still hot out! I love that you can easily pair booties with shorts, dresses, and crops as well. They’re super versatile!
A fun pair of flats: Even though I love fall fashion, I get really sad about seeing all of my bright and fun summer clothes be pushed to the back of the closet. Same goes for shoes. But fall fashion doesn’t have to be all boring! There are so many fun flats out there that can quickly replace your beloved summer snazzy sandals! Similar to booties, a good pair of flats can be versatile and not too hot. I just can’t get over these sparkle babies!
Leopard: I’ve always been in love with leopard but come “fall” that love turns into full-blown obsession. I actually consider it a neutral so you can best believe I wear it from accessories to actual items of clothing. But if you’re not ready to go all in cheetahlicious (if you’re picking up this Disney Channel Original Movie reference, let’s be best friends) just yet, a simple touch like a clutch or scarf is the perfect way to transition into the print!
Darker Beauty Hues: Sure, a full face smokey eye makeup look sounds perfect when you’re feeling fall… until it slides right off your sweaty little face! If the weather isn’t ready for a bit more makeup, don’t shy away from a deeper lip shade! I love to start incorporating fall beauty hues with a light eye and bolder lip color. It’s the perfect pop without feeling too over the top. And another great way to add in a little depth? Nail polish! If you know me, you know that nails are my one beauty “must”… meaning I always need to have them done! So when I’m craving fall, I reach for these three shades by OPI: Miami Beet, Lincoln Park After Dark, and You Don’t Know Jaques! (all linked in the slider below).
That wasn’t so bad, was it? I mean, at least I didn’t talk about pumpkin scented candles mid-August, right? That’s for next week. Just kidding. Well, maybe.
Happy Pre-Fall styling and shopping!
