Happy Hump Day! Last weekend the sun was out and though it wasn’t quite as warm as I would have liked it to be (I like hot hot hot weather), I took what I could in March. Sam and I went out for a walk with a good friend and I decided to brave a tank top. Like a dummy, I thought that since it wasn’t very warm I’d just put sunscreen on my face and soak up what sun I could elsewhere. Dumb dumb dumb.
I’m currently sporting a lovely racerback burn on my shoulders and back. Really gorgeous. Sam has kindly been slathering on lotion on my back ever since. The night I got burned he said, “Babe, your body is melting the lotion before I can rub it in.” Great. So needless to say, learn from my mistake. It’s time to buy ourselves some new sunscreen for the season! Here are my picks:
Tarteguard: I don’t currently own this, but tried it on at Sephora and haven’t been able to get it out of my mind since. It smells amazing (think tropical beach, sand, salt water, and umbrella drink kind of amazing), is all-natural, and has a great consisntecy. Plus, that magenta bottle is really cute. I’ve had great luck with Tarte products in the past so I definitely think this one needs to make it into my shopping cart soon.
La Roche-Posay: This stuff is gold. I use it when I’m really out in the sun for an extended period of time. It’s a funky bottle and process to apply – you shake it and then it comes out a bit watery, but then apply it and it finishes matte. It stays put, never makes my eyes sting, and never makes me break out.
Sun Bum Zinc Oxide: Sam and I used Sun Bum on our honeymoon in Bora Bora where the sun is extra intense. We loved it! This zinc oxide is perfect for the beach and swimming – thick and protective without coming out white! Sam loves this stuff so there’s your man seal of approval!
Fresh Sugar Sport Sunscreen: I’m constantly searching for a good sun lip product that stays put. I adore Fresh lip balms, so I can’t wait to try this new one! This works for face application, too.
Sun Bum: In addition to the zinc oxide, these products are probably my favorite right now. After using them on our honeymoon, I concluded that the tropical smell, natural ingredients, and staying power through salt water and serious sun time made them winners. They’re a little on the pricier side (compared to something like Coppertone), but that’s the price you pay for a natural product sans chemicals. And not only is it husband friendly, but kiddo friendly as well! I use it on the kids I nanny for and they never complain about it. Anyone with a husband and/or kids knows this is a big deal.
Bare Republic: I love sunscreen sprays! Especially when you don’t want to ask those around you for a back rubdown at the beach. Awk. This brand comes from the fancy brand Coola which has made it’s way into high end stores. This is their Target version which I am all about. It’s another great mineral option (no major chemicals) and I’ve heard great things/read great reviews.
Jergens Natural Glow: Sometimes, we just need to fake it. As the sun comes out and so do my tanks and shorts, I’m slightly horrified of what I’ve been hiding underneath my Patagonias all winter. This has no sun protection whatsoever. However, if you want to feel a bit better as you find yourself out in the sun more with more to show off, this stuff helps. I’ve used it on and off since high school and though they continue to improve the formula, I can’t say that I still don’t kinda dislike the smell. BUT, after I put it on the other night and came to bed, Sam said I smelled good. Good! Yes! So I’m calling this a consistent win of a product in my book. Just make sure to rub it in evenly! And if you’re pale like me, definitely opt for the light formula and be patient and let it build through a weeks worth of applications. Don’t get crazy and think you’re ready for insta-tan and go for the dark and them come out a clementine. Opt for a professional spray tan if you need color quick!
I know that after not only crisping myself, but writing this post… I’m ready to stock up. I hope you are too! Click the links in the descriptions I wrote or click through the slider below to shop your picks.
