Aloha! My oh my, life been busy lately! I often dislike using the word ‘busy’, as our society loves to use it as an answer to the question ‘how are you?’, buuuut gosh… things really have been, well… busy! Since my last post, I’ve been in a dear friend’s wedding in Sonoma County, been working lots (nannying), and been working a lot on trying to figure out details on what’s to come for us the next few months! Phew! Let’s catch up a bit, shall we?!
This past winter has truly been a rough patch between the miserable weather (it really has been bad for us Californians, I swear it!) and both of us working and trying to figure out a weird season of life. I can’t stress it enough: I’ve truly longed for springtime to get here. During the gloomy past few months, we planned quite a few things for our calendar from spring through fall to motivate and excite us for what was to come. Well, let’s just say that calendar has filled up and then some lately! We have quite the late spring and summer ahead of us, and it really kicks off with a bang tomorrow as we head to HAWAII!
We are spending a week with my parents on Maui and I am so incredibly excited! I’m looking forward to no schedule, sunshine, humidity, minimal makeup, Hawaiian sweet bread, POG, fresh fish, banana pancakes, swimming in the ocean, leisurely reading, and ultimately just being present with my husband Sam and my Mom and Dad! After I press publish on this post, I’m going to be backing up and shutting down this laptop of mine and truly being ‘out of office’ for the next 7 days. I desperately need this time and I know some serious R&R will be exactly what I need to come back refreshed and dive back into real life and this blog a bit more regularly again!
But just before I do that, I did want to leave y’all with what’s on my Hawaii packing list! Because we were so blessed to go on a tropical honeymoon just under two years ago, I didn’t need to do much shopping in terms of preparing for this vacation. However, I did pick up a few new little goodies just because I can’t help myself when it comes to a tropical trip! Here’s a highlighted break down of some new things coming with me!
Clothes & Accessories:
Not too much ‘new’ here, but I couldn’t help myself with this amazing straw tote with neon orange and pink tassels! I love how BIG it is and I plan to have it be the only thing I carry on the plane! And then of course when I saw this swim cover up, I couldn’t resist as it matched the tote perfectly! And I couldn’t forget my beach staple: a ball cap! It may sound silly, but Vineyard Vines caps are my favorite. They’re big enough for my ginormous head (I buy the mens) but they’re still feminine since VV is cheeky like that! They also really do hold up and stay looking good. I put my caps through the ringer year round and these always look perfectly ‘worn in’!
And in terms of new swimwear, I did want to share this revelation I had about a month ago! So, right before our honeymoon, I swore to myself that I was never going to purchase swimwear from Target again. Not because it wasn’t adorable, but because it never really fit me. I needed to face the facts: I need to purchase swimwear with bra sizes. So from that point, I stocked up on Victoria’s Secret swimwear and never looked back because I love it so much! Well, about a month or so ago when I began searching for one new suit to add to my collection for this upcoming trip, I couldn’t understand why VS had nearly no selection online! I searched, and searched, and searched. Nada. THEN, I found out that VS is NO LONGER CARRYING SWIMWEAR.
I’m still in shock. But there is a serious silver lining to this story!
TARGET NOW SELLS SWIMWEAR WITH BRA SIZES. (insert all of the emoji praise hands!)
So now the best of both worlds really does exist and I can pick up a suit that actually fits and is super reasonable in price! I chose this top & this bottom and it fits similarly to the VS ones I love but has a bit more detailing. I’m so excited to wear it!
I’m challenging myself to keep my beauty routine as minimal as possible on this trip! I’m hoping to stick to sunscreen (trying this natural option in addition to my usual), easy beach waves, a swipe of mascara and a good lip balm for day and lip color for night. I’m excited to wear this lip balm with sunscreen that everyone raves about and says it doesn’t give you that sunscreen-y feeling. I’ve also been loving these Maybelline lip crayons. They’re so pigmented and feel like lip balm so they’re perfect for a pop of color without being sticky and fussy!
With minimal makeup and glorious humidity, I can’t wait to prioritize taking care of my dry skin. TULA recently sent me more product and it couldn’t have come at a better time! I’m so excited to let my skin really drink it in and enjoy a fresh face! I had been out of some of the TULA products recently and in the 2 days I’ve been using it again, I can already notice a huge difference! I’ll do a more in-depth review on their products again soon!
One very random beauty item I’m packing and oh so excited about? These silly looking hair ties. I’ve heard other bloggers talk about them and giggled as all I could think about was how they looked like the key chains I used to have to wear on my wrist at all times when I worked in retail. Because of that alone, I wasn’t sure I could get into them without having flashbacks of stressful work environments. Well, I got over it and purchased since I’m constantly wearing my hair up throughout the week and certainly in warm weather and they promise to prevent headaches and damage (two things I hate about normal hair ties!). Well, I’ve been wearing them this week and LOVING them. I truly didn’t think I would, but here I am! Yes, it looks like a telephone cord. But they hide in your hair pretty easily (I got the nude color) and it’s worth it for less tugging on this scalp of mine!
So there’s a little recap of what’s coming along! The last time I went to Hawaii, I had just turned 21. I packed about 12 bottles of sunscreen and tanning lotion and 15 pairs of shoes. Wish I was kidding. My family still makes fun of me for it. This round, I’m really trying to be intentional on being a bit more “minimal” (for me at least, ha!) and just bringing what I really need and love!
Which kinda brings me back to why I’m really looking forward to a little break from the internet this coming week! I may not have had capacity to get blog posts up regularly, but I’ve still found myself online and scrolling through social media and other bloggers. And I don’t know if I’m just still feeling overly sensitive since I shared in this post, but I still just kinda need a break! I need a little break from the constant consumerism, constantly viewing what’s ‘new’ and what I never knew I ‘needed’, and constantly seeing women professionally photographed in the latest and greatest.
Here’s the thing. I will always love ‘things’. I’ll always love clothes and shoes and beauty products and keeping in the know about what’s new and cute out there. And I will always treat myself to a few new things before an upcoming trip. But at the same time, lines also have to be drawn!
I don’t need 20 new outfits. And I don’t need the latest trendy sandals when all I’ll really wear are my worn Jack Rogers. And no, I don’t really need to try on 100 different items on Insta Stories and say to y’all ‘you need it too’ and fuel all of our fires. Am I tempted by it all? Absolutely. But I don’t need it. And sometimes I need to really check myself on that!
So with that, I’m looking forward to this time to re-draw those lines for me personally, unplugging, and being present in paradise! I’ll certainly post a little here and there on Instagram and hope to snap some pics from the trip to share on here later, but for now… aloha, laptop!
See y’all soon, sweet friends!
