Well, hello! My husband Sam and I would like you to meet…
Dallas Walker Campbell!
I had originally thought I’d easily get this blog post up this past Monday, after we picked him a week ago from today! HAHA to me! So ignorant! I’ve not had a free hand since last Saturday! I knew puppy mamahood would be a lot of work and I thought I was totally prepared for it. After all, I grew up with a dog, I grew up with a horse, I’ve been nannying babies (infants to middle schoolers) since I was 13 years old….. I had the role of puppy mom in the bag! Again, let’s all just take a little minute to chuckle at myself. Once this little golden nugget came into my life and was my own and in my own home? All bets were off! It’s a ton of work and I’m pooped, but it’s 1000% worth it! I’m absolutely obsessed with this little guy and the feelings are mutual!
We are overjoyed to have Dallas Walker in our lives! I wanted to share a bunch of pictures with y’all this Saturday from the very beginning of him making his way into this world and the process of bringing him home with us for good!
Both Sam and I have always wanted a Golden Retriever. [Fun fact: Sam first asked me for my number by sending me a picture of a Golden and having the dog ask if it was okay to call me!] Finding a reputable Golden Retriever breeder was not an easy task, especially while doing it simultaneously searching for housing this past spring. Getting a Golden Pup takes lots of planning ahead, so we had actually put a deposit down for him in April… long before we knew where we would be living and when. It was definitely a leap of faith, and one that certainly stressed me out when the housing search became increasingly difficult, but deep down I knew things would work out.
Well remember when I shared that after landing in Nashville we opened our phones to receive news that we ‘got’ our house? Well we also received an email while on that flight with the news and photos sharing that Dallas was born! Isn’t that the best?? Meant to be!
Just born! 6 girls, 5 boys!
From there on out our breeder sent a few pics of the litter every week or so. Isn’t it amazing how they go from looking like little rats to actual puppies?! Getting puppy updates was a huge motivator in packing up our lives and moving as well as settling into our new place!
I keep staring at the litter pics trying to pick out Dallas! Haha!
When Dallas and his brothers and sisters passed their vet checks at 5 weeks, we were able to go pick him out at 6 weeks! So off we drove to the country to go play with puppies for the morning! #DreamSaturday. We had pick of the litter, and knew we wanted a boy. But both Sam and I were a little nervous to pick him out! How would he know he was ‘the one’? What if we disagreed? What if we couldn’t pick just one?! We concluded we would just ‘know’, and that’s exactly what happened. All of the puppies were so darn cute and cuddly, but the one with the bright blue ribbon collar (of course it was blue!!) just wouldn’t get out of my lap! (You can even see this in all the photos with multiple puppies!) He just kept cuddling and kissing and chewing and when we had narrowed it down to 3 puppies, I just held Dallas up and looked into his little eyes and totally cried. I knew! So with that, the breeder and I joked that I had said ‘yes’ to the puppy (like saying ‘yes’ to your wedding dress), we chose him, and took 75 photos. Not an exaggeration.
Special shout out to sweet Jane, Dallas’ birth mama!
After we picked him out, we patiently waited 2 weeks until we could finally pick him up for good! In that waiting period, I felt like I was nesting for a baby! I think we placed nearly 10 Amazon orders in that time and I organized our new home like crazy. It’s now in total disarray, but again… laughing at myself!
Last Saturday, July 22nd… we went to pick him up for good! He said goodbye to his remaining brothers and sisters and his horsey friends on the farm. He was unsure about the crate in the car at first, but was just happy that I was sitting next to him. We got him home without a hitch (I think Sam drove under the speed limit the whole way!) and we started settling in! The first night was better than I expected, but without going into too much detail I’ll just say this: being a puppy mama is what I presume being a human mama is like!!! The good news is that every day and night seems to get a little bit easier! And he’s certainly made himself quite at home!
Pick up day! He was already so much bigger!
Welcome home, Dallas Walker!
I’ve got about 1000000 more pictures, but those were some goodies. Dallas loves all the blue and white, and specifically loves items from Pottery Barn! That’s my son!
We’re clearly obsessed and not ashamed of it! If you follow along with me on Instagram, you’ll see the daily progress and certainly get plenty of puppy updates! I even made Dallas his own Instagram, so you can specifically follow along what he’s personally up to there! Yes, I am that dog mom.
I hope you enjoyed seeing our little journey to bringing home Dallas as much as we loved it! Now, my hands are back to being tied because I have an awake puppy!
