Happy Monday! Today is a fun post for me to share! Not only because I am a beauty and skincare product junkie, but because I’ve now implemented a new way to link my favorite products up on my site! I’ll go through a rundown of each product and what my current step by step process is and if any of the products listed are of interest, you can simply click through the slider at the bottom of the post and then click on a product you may be interested in knowing more about or ultimately purchasing. Pretty easy and helpful, I think! Let’s get to it, shall we?
Let me preface all of this post by noting that I have combination skin. It can be super oily if I’m not properly hydrating and super tight and dry if I’m using too harsh or drying of products. Fun fact: did you know that if you have oily skin you should slather on the moisture? It seems counterintuitive, yes, but the reason your skin gets so oily is that it’s trying to make up for the fact that it needs more moisture! Once I realized this revelation (thanks to many beauty blogs and magazine tips), my
life skin has forever changed.
Good Morning Routine:
Because my skin feels stripped of it’s natural oils if I over-cleanse, I simply splash cold water on my face and pat dry before applying any products. This feels refreshing and is enough to wash away any eye boogies, traces of weird sleep sweat, or drool from my slumber. Sorry, but it’s true and you know it. Then, I proceed with my products.
Step 1: Apply serum. I used to be skeptical of serums (mostly because of their high price tags) but as they have become increasingly popular, I decided to give them a go. I have seen so much change in my skin once I started using a serum! It’s preventative aging and brightening properties are actually noticeable! I’m hooked.
Step 2: Moisturize. It’s crucial! In the winter/colder months, I use Clinique’s Dramatically Different Moisturizing Cream, which is a slightly heavier version of their standard lotion option. I will say, it’s really not that much heavier than the lotion, but I love it’s slightly heavier consistency and how it still feels so light on my face. It’s certainly a keeper.
Step 3: Sunscreen! Oh man. If I’m being honest, I’m not always great about this step in terms of everyday use. But I’m determined to get better as of late. I’ve recently discovered this Oil of Olay version for sensitive skin. They’ve been making an SPF 15 version of this for years, but this one is their new SPF 30 option! It’s lightweight, doesn’t feel like sunscreen, has built in moisturizers (sometimes I skip step 2 and head straight for just this as my moisturizer if I’m feeling hydrated), doesn’t make me break out, and has really low toxicity ratings if you’re into more natural product options. Also, it’s cheap!
Step 1: Cleanse. Going back to the fact that my skin can get dry by over-washing, I have to really watch it with cleansers. They can be so drying – even the ones that say they’re not! I discovered this Clinique Cleansing Balm and it’s been a dream of a product. You start by using it dry (no water) and rub it all around your face and watch it remove all makeup (even waterproof mascara) and other dirt and oils. It has a very oily consistency (again, seems counterintuitive but… oil cleanses oil, I promise!) which is different to get used to, but when you feel like you’ve worked it’s way all over your face, you wash it off and it becomes what’s like a light cleanser. Switching away from a traditional foamy cleanser was certainly a change for me, but I now love this routine far more than any cleanser I’ve ever used.
Step 2: There’s that serum again! Love it.
Step 3: Slather on the night cream. The anti-aging struggle is real, my friends. I’ve been using anti-aging products since my early 20’s which may sound silly to some, but now that I’m in my late 20’s and I still see wrinkles forming, I’m thankful I’ve at least been monitoring it. I recently discovered this night cream from First Aid Beauty and it’s aaaaaahmazing. Most night creams are so expensive, but this one is pretty darn reasonable and lasts for a good while. It goes on thick (think shea butter) but is approved for all types of skin without risk of breakouts. It’s packed full of nutrients for the skin and is on the more natural product spectrum. I also love the way it smells – clean, simple, refreshing. I can’t get enough of this stuff.
Step 4: Eye cream. I slather this on too! This version is simple. It’s really just more moisture for the eye area, nothing super fancy. But it’s non-cosmogenic and doesn’t sting or bother my eyes. I think it’s really helped with the puffs and dark circles, too! It can also be used during the day.
A few times a week:
I use an exfoliating scrub. This one is a Clinique classic and one that I’ve been using on and off since high school. I love how the light grainy texture feels and how it’s cooling and invigorating in the shower. It’s far too harsh for everyday use (as most exfoliators are), but perfect to slough off dry skin build up throughout the week.
That’s that! I take skincare pretty darn seriously and I do believe in the benefits of that. As you can see, Clinique does ‘win’ most often in my choices, but that’s because they’re a classic company with really great products. I love how you can always know what to expect with them and their product lines are simple. Nothing too complex.
So as I mentioned above, click the links in the slider below to get more information! And if you have any product recommendations of your own, I’d love to hear them! I’m always a complete snoop when it comes to hearing about other women’s beauty regimens. So there’s your disclaimer if you ever invite me over and I “use your powder room”. Kidding. Well, kinda. Eh, maybe not. 😉
