Thanks to Beautycounter, switching my makeup and skincare routines to safer has been remarkably easy. The products are so high performing that I never really feel like using anything is a sacrifice for safer or that a product doesn’t live up to the original toxic one I was using prior. But I’ll be totally honest… switching my haircare routine to safer has been more of a challenge.
When I first started discovering how many junk ingredients were in my beauty products that I was using day in and out, I immediately thought of the things I was putting directly on my skin. But my hair? Not so much. Haircare is probably the beauty category I’m most resistant to change in. I have my routine and I want to stick to it! Plus, I love hairspray! But as the shampoo and conditioner I was using finally ran out a few months ago, I decided it was time to switch to safer.
Standard hair products (drugstore and/or salon) are filled with preservatives, silicones, parabens, sulfates, and undisclosed fragrances. [If you ever need a refresher in what ways these ingredients are harmful to us, click over to The Never List] So when you’re intensely massaging those ingredients into your scalp day in and out, you can best believe they’re getting absorbed immediately and right into your bloodstream. We can do better!
I’ve had great success in areas of switching things over, and then also not the greatest of success. But I’m here to be honest, so I’ll walk you through my process!
THE REALLLLLY GOOD
I wash my hair 1-2 times a week. It’s thick and I try to maximize dry shampoo as much as possible in between washings! I also use a curling iron nearly every time I style it, so the less washing the better in terms of keeping things happy and healthy. With that routine, I needed something that could get all the dry shampoo, oil, and dirt out while also conditioning it! That’s a specific list of hair needs, so I didn’t have the highest of hopes. But, I can honestly say that Beautycounter’s Daily Shampoo & Daily Conditioner have truly changed my hair for the better! Here’s why:
- My hair has never felt so clean post-shower while still remaining conditioned. I didn’t realize how much those junk ingredients were creating such a gross build up in my hair until now I really know what clean hair feels like!
- Because my hair is actually clean, it now has so much natural volume! It feels light and voluminous, which is saying a lot since I have so much of it!
- I believe my hair is growing more, holds style better, and my scalp has normalized. Essentially, everything seems to be functioning far more “happy” than ever before!
Switching my shampoo and conditioner to safer was an unexpected change for the better for me and I honestly now can’t recommend it enough. I truly believe you will see results from making the switch! Side note: a girlfriend of mine has a girlfriend who suffers from Alopecia. While living with wigs, she began using Beautycounter shampoo & conditioner and believes that it stimulated hair growth. Because of this transformative process, she decided to be a consultant because of it! Is that not amazing?! I say these things because I believe in the power of cleaner ingredients making a significant impact on the way our bodies function and operate. Our scalp is a significant surface area of our bodies and our hair is something that is a large part of our physical appearances. So I think it’s important we take care of both!
In terms of others making the switch, there are options other than the daily formulas. There is the Volumizing Collection, Smooth & Control Collection, and Repair & Nourish Collection (all can be sold individually or mix and matched as well). I realize that my thick, wash once-a-week hair is rare for most, so I recommend going with one of these options to suit your personal haircare needs, especially if you wash and style it more often than I do! I myself am going to order the Volume & Shape Volumizing Mist next to add into my routine! I’m eager to try it, because most safer styling products can be total hits and misses, which leads me to…
THE PRETTY DARN GOOD
Dry shampoo. As you read above, I pretty much need it to survive. Because though I may wash only once a week, I certainly need help to keep me from looking like a member of a 90’s alternative band. I’ve tried tons on the market, all in aerosol form, and loved many. But sadly, they’re filled with those same nasty-for-you ingredients. The powder versions seem to be the best in terms of safety on the market, but I didn’t want to commit to too high of a price tag since I go through it so much! After a few failed attempts, I finally found SheaMoisture Peace Rose Nourish & Silken Dry Shampoo. Here’s what I love about it:
- The scent is amazing, especially if you love rose like I do!
- It absorbs and blends well and doesn’t gunk up in your hair like many dry shampoos do.
- It gives wonderful volume!
- It has safer ingredients than what I was using before
I will be totally honest, I miss my aerosol dry shampoo. Because I prefer applying it that way and I’m still stuck in my old mindset! But because this is a product I use day in and out and really work into my scalp, I don’t want to be using the junk. This product is by far the best I’ve tried thus far, but I’m not opposed to continue to search for others out there! I also not so secretly hope for Beautycounter to come out with a dry shampoo. Because, wouldn’t that be amazing?
THE ‘OKAY, I THINK THIS CAN WORK FOR EVERYDAY PURPOSES’
Let me shout this from the rooftops: I LOVE HAIRSPRAY! The higher the hair, the closer to the Good Lord. It’s a must in my beauty routine, yet totally toxic to breathe day in and out. Let’s face it, if the bottle says ‘highly flammable’ on it, it’s likely not great to be breathing into your system. But hey, you know this lady loves balance! I will never give up Chick Fil A just as I’ll never give up my hairspray! However, I’m willing to make changes on an every day basis just as I don’t eat fried chicken sandwiches every day. So, I tried this hairspray and it’s………. okay.
- I’ve been spraying it very lightly and I do think it provides some hold and frizz protection.
- Doesn’t make my husband and dog cough when I spray it
- It will never perform like traditional hairspray
- The ingredients aren’t all that much better than some aerosol formulas
- The scent is very ‘meh’
That’s my honest opinion! Would I recommend it if you’re trying to incorporate some safer options for your day in and out beauty routine? Yes. Would I say use it for an up-do on your wedding day. ABSOLUTELY NOT.
I’m going to continue my search and keep you posted! But again, wouldn’t life be easier if Beautycounter came out with one? Here’s to hoping!
So that’s my safer hair journey thus far. I truly cannot say enough good things about switching over to what Beautycounter has to offer in terms of haircare. But I long for the day when they expand their styling products! I’ll continue to test out what they currently offer, continue to hunt for other options on the market, and keep using my aerosol hairspray for special occasions.
If you have any questions on making the switch to safer haircare, or safer beauty in general, never hesitate to reach out! I’d love to chat and help you narrow down products that will hopefully work best for you!
Wishing y’all a wonderful weekend full of big, beautiful (and safer!) hair!
